New Details on Proposal for Negaunee Crime Lab

With both budget and lease issues, the future of the Marquette State Police crime lab is in doubt.

Plans to move it to a former Navy submarine communication post in Humboldt recently came to light.

But now, it may end up moving to Negaunee Township instead.

If the State Police get what they’re asking for, the new lab would be built right next door to the existing Negaunee Post.

They’re asking for an $8 million federal grant from the stimulus bill.

According to Marquette State Representative Steve Lindberg, the money would cover equipment, new staff and building the new structure.

The new lab would house state-of-the-art DNA sequencing which could help all the forensic labs statewide.

The State Police should find out within the next 2 to 3 months if they’ll get the grant.
