New Class for U.P. Sports Hall of Fame

Over the weekend, the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame unveiled its latest class of inductees.

One of them is a longtime hockey coach that just about every sports fan in the U.P. is likely to be familiar with.

Rick Comley guided Lake Superior State to an NAIA national title and then took NMU and Michigan State to NCAA titles.

Ron ‘Satch’ Englund was a longtime assistant high school football coach under Menominee’s Ken Hofer.

Basketball standout Pat Groleau of Nahma was an NAIA All–American at Lake State.

Bob King of Manistique coached high school track and cross country in California for 45 years.

Deanna Sutton Kreski of Rudyard was the GLIAC women’s basketball Player of the Year in 1992 at NMU.

Paul Miller of Escanaba was a U.P. boys’ basketball Coach of the Year at two different schools, Escanaba and Stephenson.

Ron Nettell of Houghton played football and hockey at Michigan Tech back in the 1940s.

Deke Routheaux of Ironwood was both the men’s and women’s basketball head coach at Gogbeic Community College.

John Vasseau of Marquette was a fixture on the Marquette Sentinels hockey teams of the ’50s.

And Bob Whitens won state basketball titles as a player at Hermansville and as a coach at North Central in Powers.

The inductions will take place next spring.
