New car gas mileage unchanged in March

ANN ARBOR — Gas mileage on new cars sold in the U.S. is holding steady.

Researchers from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute say the average window-sticker fuel economy of new vehicles was 25.3 miles per gallon in March. Overall, fuel economy is down about half a mile per gallon from the peak reached in August of 2014, but it’s still over five miles per gallon better than it was when this particular study began in 2007.

The eco-driving index — which estimates average monthly emissions generated by individual U.S. drivers — rose just slightly between December and January.
