New book focuses on U.P. hunting

Richard P. Smith with 8-pointer he bagged Nov. 18, 2012 while hunting a scrape line in Keweenaw County. The buck was at least 3 1/2 years old. Richard will be signing his new book in Marquette Friday, December 21, and in Iron Mountain Saturday, December 22.

Firearm deer season is over for 2012, but the memories are being kept alive in a new book.

Richard P. Smith has authored the 4th edition of Deer Hunting. He says it is one of the biggest and best books on the topic, containing valuable information on every one of its 448 pages. Some of that information is presented visually in the form of almost 300 color photographs.

As a deer hunter himself, with almost 50 years of experience, Smith says he knows what type of information deer hunters want and need to add to their knowledge and help make them successful. His most recent title is packed with useful insights and facts that may not only help make readers better hunters, but help them appreciate their quarry even more.

Smith has written seven other deer hunting books:  Tracking Wounded Deer, Stand Hunting For Whitetails and a 5-book set titled Great Michigan Deer Tales. Each of the five books in the Deer Tales series has a different collection of short stories about how, where, when and by whom the biggest bucks in the state were bagged. Smith says each chapter in these books was carefully selected, so readers can learn lessons from them that can be applied to their hunting, making the stories educational as well as entertaining.

He also has released a DVD, “Walking With Whitetails.” Richard spent eight years following and filming deer for this DVD.  This 90-minute video includes battling bucks, an antler rubbing competition, shedding velvet, a buck breeding doe, a sleeping buck, does nursing fawns, amazing antler development and more.

Smith’s previous DVD is for bear hunters.  “Judging Black Bears” is a 46-minute production that outlines a number of simple techniques that anyone can use to help determine the size and sex of bears hunters see while hunting. The information is appropriate for both spring and fall seasons.

Smith has also written a couple of valuable references about black bears for hunters as well as other outdoor recreationists who want to avoid problems from bears while afield: Understanding Michigan Black Bear and Black Bear Hunting.
Richard P. Smith will be in downtown Marquette on Friday, December 21, from 4-7 p.m. and in the Midtown Mall in Iron Mountain on Saturday, December 22, from 12-3 p.m. for a book signing.  His books and DVDs are also available at Book World. Autographed copies can also be ordered from him through his web site: His mailing address to send orders is 814 Clark St. Marquette, MI 49855.
