Negaunee school receives grant for field trip

NEGAUNEE — Third graders at Lakeview Elementary School in Negaunee recently took a field trip to the Marquette Regional History center, and thanks to a grant they’ll get a chance to go again.

The school received a Michigan Arts and Culture Grant worth about $440 to use for transportation to and from the history center.

Going to the history center is a way for students to connect what they learn in the classroom to what life was like in the early days of Michigan’s history.

“Because of social studies curriculum is all about Michigan’s history, just being able to take them to see it in action just really cements it into their minds,” Lakeview Elementary third grade teacher Michelle Anderson said. “I talk to third graders I’ve had in the past and one of the things they just really remember is where we went what we learned when we were there (at the history center) and it just brings it all together so the textbook learning comes together and they just get to see it.”

The classes learned about voyageurs and Native Americans at the center last week, and when they go in the spring, they’ll learn about pioneers.
