Negaunee School Buildings Millage

The Negaunee school board says school buildings in the city need a lot of work.

To get the work done, they’re asking residents to keep up the financial support they’re already giving.

Voters passed a millage for the city school sinking fund in 2003, and now it’s about to run out.

The original proposal was 2.25 mills for 5 years.

If it’s renewed, it would be 2 mills for an additional 5 years.

The school board has identified various needs for the school district’s buildings.

The needs range from upgraded fire systems to a new science lab in Negaunee Middle School.

The board says the funds can’t be used for operational purposes.

If the sinking fund isn’t renewed, the school board will have to resort to the general fund, which already has a $20,000 deficit.

The millage renewal request will be on the ballot 3 weeks from now.
