Just like Gordon Lightfoot sang about in “The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, the gales of November have come early.

The entire Upper Peninsula is under a high wind warning until tomorrow night.

Much of the U.P. has seen gusts above 50 miles an hour today.

Isolated spots have been above 60.

The wind has brought power outages to about 3,500 people during the day today.

That included parts of Dickinson County, part of Ishpeming, part of Houghton and part of Escanaba.

National Weather Service forecaster Justin Titus says the winds have affected the southern U.P. more prominently than other areas, but downed power lines and downed trees are a concern everywhere.

The high wind warning is in effect until 8am Thursday for Ontonagon and Keweenaw counties, as well as southern Houghton County.

That’s about when the storm will loosen its grip.

Titus says we’ll still have windy, wet conditions then but he doesn’t think they’ll be anything like what we’ll have tonight and tomorrow.

The Coast Guard is also urging boaters to seek a safe haven and keep small craft off the water.

The currents can sweep you away from shore very quickly.
