Names Released in Death of Stranded ORV Rider

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the husband and wife involved in the off road vehicle incident that occurred on May 27, 2011.

Daniel and Marsha Hockin, both 62, of Marquette Township, were on an ORV excursion approximately one mile east of County Road 510, on an un-named logging road near snowmobile trail 14 in Negaunee Township on Friday. The couple left home about 2:15 p.m. that afternoon. Less than two hours later, their ORV became stuck in the mud.

When they were not able to free the ORV, Marsha Hockin sought help. She made “Help” signs pointing in the direction of the incident when she was looking for assistance.

The couple was in the wooded area for three nights with no supplies or proper clothing. Sometime during the ordeal, Daniel Hockin succumbed to exposure and prior medical conditions.

On Monday, May 30, 2011 at approximately 9:50 a.m. Marsha Hockin made her way to County Road 510 where a passerby assisted her and called for emergency responders.

Marsha Hockin was disoriented and suffering from exposure. The trail conditions were very muddy making response difficult. Daniel Hocking was recovered and transported to Marquette General Health System. Marsha Hockin was also transported to Marquette General Health System where she was treated for exposure injuries and released.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Search and Rescue, Medi-Ride EMS, Marquette General EMS, Negaunee Township Fire/First Responders and volunteers from the public.
