Police are investigating an early morning house fire in Iron Mountain that appears to have killed one man.

The Iron Mountain Police Department responded to the 1200 block of South Milwaukee Avenue just before 4 a.m. Wednesday morning – after a resident called about a strange odor.

When officers arrived, they noticed smoke in the area and began to search for the source. Police soon discovered smoke coming out of the roof vents and eaves of the house at 1232 South Milwaukee Avenue.

The Iron Mountain Fire Department was called to the scene.

Police officers attempted to contact residents of the house, but were unable to enter the home due to the amount of smoke.

Once the fire crews arrived, the fire was extinguished. When firefighters entered the home, they discovered the body of a man.

An investigator from the Michigan State Police Fire Marshall’s Office has been called to help with the investigation.

Assisting at the scene: Kingsford Public Safety Department, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, Beacon Ambulance and members of Wisconsin Electrical and DTE.

The fire remains under investigation. The name of the victim has not yet been released.
