MARQUETTE — An Ishpeming man charged with open murder will undergo a competency exam so see if he is mentally fit to stand trial.

Derek Blemke, 24, is accused of killing 21-year-old Brandon LaFavre of Marquette in an apartment on Wright Street back in June. The competency exam was approved Monday during a scheduling conference.

According to the autopsy report, Blemke stabbed LaFavre twenty–four times with a knife.

Blemke remains lodged at the Marquette County Jail on no bond.
