Munising native named Catholic bishop of Gaylord

A Munising native who has served as a Catholic priest in the Lower Peninsula for decades has been named bishop of Gaylord.

Pope Francis has chosen Monsignor Steven Raica to become Gaylord’s new bishop. Monsignor Raica has served as chancellor of the Diocese of Lansing since 2005. He was born in Munising in 1952 and was ordained to the priesthood in Lansing in 1978.

Monsignor Raica succeeds Archbishop Bernard Hebda as Gaylord’s bishop. Archbishop Hebda was named coadjutor archbishop of Newark, New Jersey last September.
