Multiple vehicle accident on U.S. 41

Five people were injured following a multiple vehicle accident on U.S. 41 in Negaunee Monday afternoon.

The Negaunee City Police say the accident happened at 1:38 p.m. at the intersection ofU.S. 41 and Teal Lake Avenue.  Police say a westbound Chevrolet minivan driven by Jackie Swanson, 29, of Ishpeming, crossed the center lane on U.S. 41 and hit an eastbound Ford SUV head on.

The SUV was driven by Ruth Kivimaki, 68, of Negaunee Township.  Kivimaki’s vehicle was pushed into a Ford pick-up truck driven by Kevin VanHamiln, 29, of Gwinn.

Swanson’s vehicle continued westbound on U.S. 41 and hit a Dodge minivan that was driven by Daryl Rogers, 39, of Negaunee.  Rogers’ minivan was stationary in the westbound turn lane when it was hit.

Swanson, Kivimaki and a passenger in Swanson’s van were taken to Bell Memorial Hospital by Bell EMS for the treatment of unknown injuries.  Two additional passengers in Swanson’s vehicle were also taken to Bell Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

Swanson’s minivan and Kivimaki’s SUV were towed from the scene.

The Negaunee City Police Department was assisted at the accident by Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, Rescue 131, the Negaunee Fire Department, Bell EMS and Antilla’s Towing.

The accident is still under investigation.
