MTU\’s Wysocky, Barnes Best in GLIAC

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech women’s basketball student-athlete Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and John Barnes was named GLIAC Coach of the Year as the league handed out awards at its pre-tournament banquet tonight. Those two, plus four other Huskies, garnered All-GLIAC accolades for their 2009-10 success.

Wysocky leads the GLIAC in rebounding and field goal percentage and is second in scoring. The 6-0 forward has turned in 21 double-doubles on the season and was recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team. Wysocky, who is Tech’s fifth-ever GLIAC Player of the Year and first since Andrea Novak in 2004, is the school’s all-time leading rebounder (1,172). Her 1,822 points are 35 short of the school scoring record. Wysocky also owns the second-most career double-doubles in NCAA Division II history with 57.

In addition to GLIAC Player of the Year, Wysocky earned a third straight spot on the North Division First Team.

Barnes guided the Huskies to a school-record 25 regular season wins including a GLIAC-record 20 league victories. The seventh-year skipper has compiled a 151-54 record (.737 winning percentage) and three straight GLIAC North Division titles. The 2009-10 Huskies were the first in school history to be ranked No. 1 in the nation. Barnes has now been named the league’s coach of the year three times (also in 2005-06 and 2008-09).

Joining Wysocky on the All-GLIAC North Division First Team were seniors Danae Danen (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon), Sarah Stream (Ishpeming, Mich./Westwood) and Katie Zimmerman (Green Bay, Wis./East).

Danen averages 12.3 points and 4.5 rebounds and earned a spot on the first team after being an All-GLIAC Second Team honoree. The 6-0 center is Tech’s all-time leader in blocked shots with 164.

Stream becomes a four-time All-GLIAC honoree with three first team nods. The 5-7 point guard averages 10.0 points and 4.0 assists per game and leads the league in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.9-to-1. She is also within six assists of breaking Tech’s all-time record of 439.

Zimmerman is an All-GLIAC North Division First Team selection for the second straight year. She averages 11.3 points per game and leads the GLIAC in 3-point shooting with a 46.6 percentage. Her career 46.1 percent ranks third-best in NCAA Division II history.

Stream and senior Tara Ferris (Hartland, Wis./Waukesha Catholic) both earned GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team honors. The duo helped Michigan Tech lead the league in scoring defense (57.1) and field goal percentage defense (36.3). Ferris, a 5-8 guard, is a now two-time selection to the all-defensive team having been picked a year ago as well.
