MTU students do well in business competition

An idea to put medical information on wallet-sized identification cards propelled two Michigan Tech students to the top of a recent competition.

Young entrepreneurs Travis Beaulieu and Joel Florek came up with the idea for a business called AsfalisMed which won first place in the Bob Mark Memorial Elevator Pitch Competition at Tech on Monday.

Students had three minutes to sell their next great business idea to a panel of judges.

For placing first, Beaulieu and Florek won $1,000.

David Shull took home second place and $500 with his business, Picket, a textbook rental operation. Third place went to SafePlug, a gadget that automatically turns off appliances when the people using them forget to do so.

AsfalisMed also is a semifinalist in the statewide Accelerate Michigan innovation competition taking place in Ypsilanti this week.
