MTU soccer continues winning streak in Ohio

CANTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech scored in the opening minute and twice more in the opening half en route to a 4-1 GLIAC women’s soccer game at Malone on Friday. Jacqueline Mielke scored twice for the Huskies, who won their seventh consecutive game.

Mielke converted a defensive miscue shortly after kickoff to put her team up 1-0. In the 12th minute, it was defender Jessica Splittgerber lifting a deep shot into the top right corner for her first career tally. Haley Crites added a third goal in the 25th minute to send Tech (7-1, 5-0 GLIAC) into halftime leading 3-0.

Brianna Smith broke the shutout for the Pioneers (1-9, 0-7 GLIAC) with a tally in the 65th minute.

Tech answered with Mielke’s second of the contest and team-high seventh of the season to round out the scoring.

“I’m pleased that we scored four goals and got the win,” said coach Michelle Jacob. “The goal in the first minute set the tone, and I thought we did a good job of balancing when to take shots and when to keep possession.”

Michigan Tech, which has reeled of seven straight wins since losing its season opener, will finish off the Ohio road trip with a match at Lake Erie on Sunday (Oct. 13). Kickoff is slated for noon.
