MTU Soccer cleans up in All-Conference awards

BAY CITY, Mich. – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced that Michelle Jacob was selected as the women’s soccer coach of the year. Three players, Lindsey Van Rooy<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wsoc/2012-13/bios/van%20rooy%20lindsey00.html>, Kaitlyn Boelter<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wsoc/2012-13 /bios/boelter%20kaitlyn00.html>and Melanie
Hoffman<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wsoc/2012-13/bios/hoffman%20melanie>, each earned All-GLIAC accolades.
Jacob earned GLIAC “Coach of the Year” honors for the first time after leading Michigan Tech to a 14-3-2 overall record and a share of the GLIAC regular season title in just their third season as a program. The team finished with an 11-1-1 conference record and was undefeated at home this season with a 7-0-1 mark.
“It is a great feeling that our program has been recognized in the conference awards,” said head coach Michelle Jacob. “Our consistent play and strong work ethic throughout the season is truly what is being honored here. I wholeheartedly believe this award belongs to the entire Huskies soccer program for their hard work, heart and determination. I share this award equally with my assistant coach Chuck Coan and every single player on this team. Chuck brings with him an immeasurable soccer knowledge, a relentless work ethic and a determination to make our players the best they can be. He is a crucial component to our programs success. In addition, our players are the most fun, hardworking and determined group of players I have ever worked with. They dedicated themselves to becoming the best team they can be, and they are the ones who went out this season and earned every shutout, every goal, every assist, every victory. What makes me most proud about this award is that we earned it together.”
Van Rooy and Boelter each earned second-team and all-tournament honors for the Huskies. Van Rooy led the team with nine goals and 21 points. Boelter was a key component of the Tech defense where she started 17 games.
“Lindsey is spectacularly consistent,” said Jacob. “Her consistent work effort, leadership and never give up effort more than qualifies her for this honor. Her growth as a central midfield player at our level makes her stand out.
“Comfortable in a multitude of roles on the field, Kaitlyn has settled in as a central defender for the Huskies. She uses her soccer intelligence as well as her significant physical ability to manage our defense.”
Hoffman earned honorable mention honors after recording two assists in 16 starts.
“Mel is the quintessential attacking wing defender,” said Jacob. “Her speed is daunting to forwards and defenders alike. She runs with and past the conferences fastest players. She is capable of blowing by lines of midfielders and defenders in the attack.”
