MTU players attend NHL camps

Michigan TechThe off-season for college hockey players is spent trying to improve their game any way they can. For some players, that means participating in a development camp or two.

Four players from Michigan Tech have spent the week at three different NHL development camps. Juhjar Khaira finished fourth on the team in scoring during his freshman year at MTU.

He has been in Edmonton participating in the Oilers development camp. Edmonton selected Khaira in the third round of the 2012 NHL Draft.

Khaira has enjoyed his second camp in as many years with the Oilers.

“It’s nice to come in knowing what to expect,” Khaira told ‘Oilers TV’ after a scrimmage with the other prospects. “Its nice to see where you are compared to everyone else in the program. I thought I improved a lot. My skating is a lot quicker this year,” added Khaira.

Another Huskies forward, Blake Pietila, scored the game-tying goal and added the shootout winner at a scrimmage during the New Jersey Devils camp on Tuesday.

Two other MTU players, forward David Johnstone and goaltender Jamie Phillips, are in Winnipeg at the Jets development camp.
