MTU hockey mid-season review

The Michigan Tech University hockey team has reached the halfway point of the season. The Huskies are 6-9-5 after 20 regular season games with a 4-4-4 record in conference play.

Tech is currently in a three way tie for fifth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings. MTU isn’t quite finished playing in 2013 just yet.

The Huskies have two very important games coming up next week in Detroit. Michigan Tech won the Great Lakes Invitational a year ago, so they are the defending champs.

“We have to put some emphasis into winning the GLI,” said Huskies head coach Mel Person. “We’re the defending champs of the tournament and we’re going to down there with the thought of winning that tournament. We’ve got to get away for a while, get refocused, re-energized, and come back and half a great second half.”

“It’s going to be tough coming out of Christmas with two road series right off the bat, but if we can get points there, we’ll set ourselves up nicely the rest of the way,” said Huskies junior forward Blake Hietala.

Michigan Tech will play against Michigan State in the GLI semifinals on Dec. 27th. The Huskies have two victories already this season against the Spartans. Tech won both games against MSU in Houghton back in October.
