MSP warns of new phone scam
The Michigan State Police is warning people about a new phone scam where people are posing as members of the State Police.
Police say the caller callers are claiming to be members of the State Police, and tell callers you must pay money to clear a warrant, and to avoid being arrested you have to pay a fine.
Police are reminding people that law enforcement will never call to notify you of a warrant and ask for money or bank account information.
The Michigan State Police has a few helpful tips to avoid becoming a victim of a scam:
- Do not give out personal information to unknown callers
- Do not respond to unsolicited e-mails from unknown senders
- Confirm the identity of a contact by independently speaking with the identified source (such as your bank, credit card company, government agency, etc.)
- Ask for a call-back name and number, and then use a reliable source, such as the phone book, to confirm the contact’s phone number or e-mail
- Report any suspicious contacts to police
