Mqt. County Relay for Life starts Saturday

This weekend, Marquette County residents will be raising money for cancer research and celebrating the lives of those who’ve battled cancer.

The American Cancer Society is gearing up for the 18th annual Marquette County Relay for Life.

It’ll take place Saturday and Sunday at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming, and people are excited for the return of the twenty-four-hour-long event.

“Right now, we have a record amount of teams,” American Cancer Society community representative Carl Fulsher said. “Forty teams have signed up for the Relay for Life in Marquette County, which is the most we’ve ever had, so looking forward to big things this year. Anybody is welcome to come to this event, and it’s grown each year, and it has a very special meaning for a lot of people.”

Last year, the event moved from a Friday-Saturday timetable to Saturday and Sunday.

The move freed up some time for a national cancer study which took place alongside the relay.

“This year, we’re going to be able to have our auction during the afternoon, have our silent auction going throughout the day. We’ve got a performance by the Blue Notes. We’re able to stretch the relay out more throughout the whole day on Saturday,” Fulsher said.

The relay begins at Al Quaal at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
