Moose Season in Michigan?

If a Michigan state Senator gets his way, hunters could have a shot at a new big game species — moose.

Traverse City Republican Jason Allen introduced a bill on Wednesday that would create a moose hunting advisory council.

And that group would determing the likelihood of such a season coming to pass.

DNR wildlife biologist Dr. Dean Beyer, Jr. estimates there are somewhere between 500 and 600 moose in the U.P.

He adds that if there were a moose season, it would include restrictions similar to those in place on elk hunting.

The DNR says most of the U.P.’s moose population is in the western U.P. in places like Marquette, Baraga and Iron Counties.
