Month to celebrate maritime history
MARQUETTE– If you’d like to learn about Marquette’s Maritime History, August is the perfect month.
It’s Maritime Month at Marquette’s Maritime Museum and they will be hosting events all month long and events include Famous Shipwreck Day, Kids Day and even a Evening Lighthouse Tour.
A museum spokesperson said that the support from the community means a lot.
“When the community comes out to support events like this or wants to come out and have a good time it shows, at least to our museum that people are really enthusiastic about our museum and maritime history.” said seasonal manager Ryan DuBay, “Knowing we have Lake Superior right here and what Lake Superior means to everybody, local, tourist or student.”
The next event coming up will be the Famous Shipwreck day August thirteenth, however there will be events running through the thirty–first. If you’d like a place on the Evening Lighthouse Tour, contact Ryan DuBay at (906) 226-2006.
All the events and dates are as follows:
August 13th
Famous Shipwreck DaY – Help the Marquette Maritime Museum celebratetwo famous shipwrecks on the Great Lakes, The Edmund Fitzgerald and the Henry B. Smith. Inside the Marquette Maritime Museum gift shop are books about both ships and we will have signed copies by the author Fredrick Stonehouse.
August 17th
Evening Lighthouse Tour – Take a tour of the 150-year-old Marquette Harbor Lighthouse as well as the Old Coast Guard Station. During the tour we explain the history, but also give ghost stories of the Coast Guard Station and Lighthouse. Prices $9 for Adults $5 for Children for evening tour, RSVP your spot.
August 20th
Kids Day – Come celebrate Kids Day with the Maritime Museum, with a parent/guardian admission to the Maritime Museum, children twelve and under get into the museum for FREE.
August 23rd
Marquette Life-Saving Station Talk At 7pm Fredrick Stonehouse will talk about the Life-Saving Service in Marquette at the Maritime Museum.
August 26th-August 28th
Windjammers on the Lakes –
Come see some of the great ships on Lake Superior and all of the Great Lakes, including the Pride of Baltimore and the If and When (General Patton’s sail yacht) and the El Galeon, a recreated Spanish Galleon. This event is concurrent with Harborfest.
August 31st
Evening Lighthouse Tour
