Community members rally to help at mobile food pantry
ISHPEMING– Over 30 volunteers showed up to the CrossBridge Church Parking lot in Ishpeming Thursday morning to hand out 15,000 lbs. of food.
The food truck is part of Feed America West Michigan’s mobile food pantry program. Over 200 people went home with baskets filled with fresh fruits, vegetables and other food items.
“It means a lot helping out all of these people,” said Kadin Fox, a senior at Ishpeming High School. “We have a big line and it really feels nice when you help someone. A lot of thank yous and a lot of very grateful people. It’s a great service here and they get a lot of food,” added Fox.
“The need has gone up over the few months that I’ve been helping and I suspect that as winter sets in, the need is probably going to get worse and worse,” said Jerry Garceau of Gauthier Insurance. “We’re glad to help and hopefully the community comes out financially or however they can.”
It costs $1,500 to bring a food truck full of food to the U.P. All of the food given away will help feed an estimated 800 people.
