Mine monitoring meetings scheduled

Mine monitoring meetings scheduled

A group of meetings begins Tuesday, September 17, to assess how a local mine is operating its business.  The Superior Watershed Partnership will be hosting four meetings in Baraga and Marquette Counties over the next two weeks.  The organization will be presenting its independent assessment of the Eagle Mine, located in Michigamme Township.

The mine has been a controversial subject for some time now.  Many people in the central Upper Michigan region have been very vocal in making sure  the environment is protected and some say allowing the mine to continue will cause irreversible damage.

The monitoring includes verification of the mine’s permit requirement for groundwater, surface water, wildlife and plant life.

The community is encouraged to attend the scheduled meetings to learn more about what the Superior Watershed Partnership is doing to monitor the mine.
