Michigan Tech to Play in Desert Hockey Classic

HOUGTHON — Michigan Tech hockey will play in Arizona at the Desert Hockey Classic on Jan. 8-9, adding two games to its 2015-16 schedule. The home series vs. Ferris State that was originally scheduled for Jan. 8-9 has been moved up to Oct. 30-31 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Arizona State, which is in its first year as an NCAA Division I program, is the host of the Desert Hockey Classic. Yale and Connecticut will also participate in the two day event. The pairings and times will be announced later.

“Michigan Tech has a long tradition of helping young programs with the goal in mind of growing the sport of college hockey,” said Tech coach Mel Pearson. “I’m happy that we can continue this mission by participating in Arizona State’s first-ever Division I hockey games.

“It will be a quality tournament with a diverse group of teams including the 2013 NCAA Champion Yale, a Hockey East team in UConn and a PAC-12 school in Arizona State.

“I’m looking forward to traveling out to Arizona. This tournament gives our alumni base in the Southwest a chance to see us play. It will be a unique experience for our players, and they’re excited to play in this event.”

Michigan Tech opens its season with a pair of games in Houghton vs. Laurentian Oct. 9-10. The Huskies’ regular season opens Oct. 16-17 at Ferris State. After a home-and-home series with Northern Michigan, Tech plays two more vs. FSU in the month of October.

The Black and Gold have 34 regular season games on their schedule, which is now complete. Other marquee home games include a Jan. 15-16 series vs. Minnesota State, Winter Carnival vs. Lake Superior State and a Mar. 4 date vs. NMU.
