Michigan Tech runners compete at USATF event

*EUGENE, Ore.* – Michigan Tech track and field student-athletes Sean Pengelly and Jason Saliga ran at the 2014 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships on Sunday (July 6). The championships were held at the historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Pengelly, a native of Hartland, Mich., had an eighth place finish in the 10,000-meter run. He crossed the line in 32:27.09.

Saliga finished 12th overall with a time of 10:03.97 in the 3,000M steeplechase. He hails from Leonard, Mich.

“We are so proud of what these two have accomplished for the Huskies as freshmen,” Tech track and field coach Joe Haggenmiller said. “Sean’s result
was very exciting, especially having to deal with tough conditions and some significant heat.

“Jason might be a bit disappointed with his result, but it was a great experience, and both guys did a great job representing Michigan Tech.”

Jonathan Green (30:54.62) from Georgetown won the 10K, while Bailey Roth (9:03.92) from Colorado Springs, Colo., won the 3,000 steeplechase.

Of the 600 participants between the ages of 16 and 19 who participated over the weekend, 170 men and 137 women are members of collegiate teams across the country.

Hayward Field has a rich history of track & field including the US Olympic Track & Field Team Trials, USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships, the
annual Nike Prefontaine Classic, NCAA Division I Championships and Pac-10/Pac-12 Conference Championships.
