CALUMET, Mich. — Black beat Gold in a shootout tonight in Michigan Tech’s hockey intrasquad game played at Calumet Colosseum in front of several hundred fans. Ryan Furne had the lone shootout goal in addition to a second half tally to lift his Black team to victory.

The Huskies, on a bye week in their regular season schedule, played two 25-minute halves at the historic rink and signed autographs for fans during the intermission. The program also collected a large amount of food to donate to the local Salvation Army food bank. The price for admission to the game was a non-perishable food item.

“It was a win-win situation,” said head coach Mel Pearson. “We wanted to create a game-like atmosphere for our players and work on situations that you can’t practice. We had a good turnout of fans as well, and that added to the game feel.

“I’d like to thank the people in Calumet for helping us out. It was a very positive experience.”

Nick Cecere put the Gold team on top with a power-play goal in the first half. Furne evened the score just a minute into the second half by putting in a loose puck out front of the net.

Team teams skated 1-all through most of the second half until Mikael Lickteig gave the Black team a 2-1 lead with just 1:00 to play.

Gold pulled its goalie for an extra attacker and it paid off with a Dennis Rix goal with less than three seconds remaining.

The teams had a three-player shootout to determine the winner. Furne scored on his opportunity and Black team goaltender Kevin Genoe stopped all three attempts to secure the victory.

Michigan Tech (9-11-1, 6-7-1 WCHA) will resume regular season play next weekend with a WCHA home series vs. Alaska Anchorage. Faceoff at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena is set for 7:07 p.m. both Friday (Jan. 13) and Saturday (Jan. 14) nights.
