SAULT STE MARIE — Michigan State Police Troopers have issued an update in the investigation of a shooting incident on Drummond Island last week.

An autopsy was conducted on the body of Aaron Furness, and it was determined that the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Border Patrol agents were helping in the search for Furness who had been reported missing on Tuesday, September 23rd. Furness was from Woodbridge, VA and was currently serving in the US Military. He had connections to the area and was believed to be in Michigan.

While on the search, agents discovered footprints and tracked them to a remote cabin, where they were fired upon. Agents returned fire from their service-issued weapons while taking cover.

The incident is still ongoing.
