Michigan moose may be added to threatened and endangered species list

LANSING — The DNR is to going to evaluate the status of moose here in Michigan.

They will be helping U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service find out whether the northwestern subspecies of moose should be added to the threatened and endangered species list.

This action was prompted by a recent petition from The Center for Biological Diversity and Honor the Earth, which provided substantial information that such a listing may be warranted.

Officials say the moose population in Michigan has declined over the past few years due to habitat loss, predation, and climate change.
A 60–day comment period has been opened to gather public information.
