Michigan Local Foods Week

You may not have heard about it.

But Governor Jennifer Granholm has set aside this week to give Michigan farms and farmers’ markets a boost.

She’s declared the week as Local Foods Week in Michigan.

At the Marquette Food Co-Op, it’s easy to see the support for local farms in the produce section.

Anything from a local farm is marked with a green sign that includes who grew it.

By the peak of summer, 75% of the produce in the co-op store comes from local growers.

They also support the farmers’ markets in Marquette, Gwinn, Negaunee and Munising.

The co-op also has information on when particular fruits and veggies come into season each year, which makes it easy to find them at those markets.

Sarah Monte of the Food Co-Op says the group also gives area residents several chances every summer to spend a day touring the farms and see what goes on in them.

The first of those farm tour days is May 30th, a week from this Sunday.

Then there are several more on other Sundays throughout the summer.
