MI Motorcycle Helmet Law

Most motorcycles are heading to storage at this time of year in the U.P., and helmets may soon follow suit.

Legislation passed the Michigan House this afternoon to lift the mandatory helmet law.

It passed by a margin of 69 to 39.

The measure will now go to the Michigan Senate.

If the legislation passes, it would allow riders 21 and older to go helmet–free if they meet required insurance and experience thresholds.

If it passes the Senate, it goes to Governor Rick Snyder for approval.

Two similar previous attempts were vetoed by former governor Jennifer Granholm.
