Menominee back in state title game
For the first time since 2007, the Menominee Maroons are headed back to Ford Field. The Maroons defeated Muskegon Oakridge, 59-28 in the Division 5 high school football state semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 23.
The Eagles had no answer for the Maroons ‘Wing-T’ offense in the first half. Menominee led at halftime, 49-0. Justin Brilinski, Devon Harris, and James Harris led the Maroons offense up and down the field in the first half.
Muskegon Oakridge didn’t bow down at halftime. The Eagles scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to pull within 49-20 of Menominee. The key play in the second half was a play by Maroons defensive back Aeron Forsberg.
Late in the third quarter, Eagles quarterback Austin Wright kept the ball on an option play. From his own 17-yard line, Wright made his way through the Maroons defense and into the open field. As Wright reached the Maroons 25-yard line, Forsberg stripped him of the football. Shaun Sullivan recovered the fumble and Menominee never looked back.
The Maroons will get a chance at redemption in the state finals. Menominee will play Grand Rapids West Catholic (9-4) on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 4:30 p.m. Last season, the Maroons lost to the Falcons, 20-17 in the state semifinals.
