Memorial pays tribute to the lives of fallen officers

HOUGHTON — Multiple Law Enforcement agencies from Houghton, Keweenaw, and Baraga Counties hosted the 2015 Upper Peninsula Officers Memorial Service earlier today in Houghton to pay tribute to the lives of peace officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

Every day a police officer goes to work, they put their life on the line to serve and protect their community. Today’s memorial service recognized and honored peace officers who gave their lives while serving in the Upper Peninsula, Wisconsin bordering agencies, Canadian bordering agencies, and officers who were Upper Peninsula natives as well.

The memorial demonstrated the potential danger every officer faces daily, and reminded the public of why the officers do what they do.

“The day and the week is set aside for people to be aware that the officers out there serving the community are serving them,” said Houghton County Sheriff Brian J. McLean, “they give up a lot of their life, and livelihood to work days, nights, and weekends and do the sort of things a lot of people don’t want to do and they have to do the sort of things some people should never even have to see, and it’s all in the day of a law enforcement officer.”

A traveling plaque was presented to the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department in honor of the Fallen Officers of the Upper Peninsula. It will be held in multiple law enforcement agencies throughout Houghton County until next year’s memorial service.
