MDOT looking for road watchers
HOUGHTON — The first signs of winter have arrived in the Upper Peninsula and the Michigan Department of Transportation is looking for drivers to be part of a program that gives them feedback on how their doing with road work.
MDOT’s Superior Region is recruiting daily commuters willing to complete brief online surveys about road conditions after winter weather events. This is the first time it is being used in the Upper Peninsula. MDOT officials say they are looking to get some extra eyes on the roads to see how they are doing with things like snow removal.
“We want to know how is the plowing going? Are there trouble spots? Were you able to drive close to the posted speed limit? And then we’ll take that information and use it as feedback on how well we’re doing,” MDOT communications representative Dan Weignarten said.

Here is a list of routes volunteers can provide feedback on in the Upper Peninsula.
- U.S. 41 between Calumet and the Portage Lake Lift Bridge
- U.S. 41 between Herman Road, south of L’Anse, and the Portage Lake Lift Bridge
- U.S. 41 between M-28 in Harvey and Westwood Drive in Ishpeming Township
- U.S. 2 between M-77 in Blaney Park and M-94 in Manistique
- M-117 between US-2 and M-28
- M-129 between M-134 in Cedarville and I-75 Business Spur/Ashmun Street in Sault Ste. Marie
- U.S. 2 between Rapid River and Escanaba
- U.S. 2 between Escanaba and M-69
- U.S. 2 between Waucedah and Iron Mountain
