May Unemployment Figures

Seasonally-unadjusted unemployment rates are rising in Michigan as a whole.
But in the Upper Peninsula, they’re still falling.
The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget says the May numbers reflect seasonal summer workers entering the job market.
The agency says only a small share of those residents had found work as of mid–May.
Statewide, unemployment rose to 8.6% in May from 8% in April.
But it’s still a step down from the 10.2% rate of a year earlier.
In the Upper Peninsula, the unemployment rate dipped in May to 8.5%, just below the state average.
It had been 9% in April.
The May 2011 rate had been 10.1%.

Houghton — 8.8%

Gogebic — 10.6%
Keweenaw — 11.5%
Ontonagon — 13.2%
