Mathias Township accident sends four to hospital

Four people were taken to the hospital Friday night following a two-car accident in Alger County.

Troopers from the Munising Detachment of the Michigan State Police received word of the crash around 7:20 p.m. Police say it happened on Eben Trenary Road near Gilliand Road in Mathias Township. An investigation revealed Joseph Parkkila, 17, of Munising was at fault after he failed to stop at Eben Trenary Road before colliding with a northbound vehicle driven by Rodney Gerth, 61, of Rumely.

Three passengers from Gerth’s vehicle and one passenger from Parkkila’s vehicle were transported by ambulance to Marquette General Hospital with injuries. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

Department and First Responders, Alger County EMS, and Marquette General EMS.
