Marquette Skate Park Groundbreaking

Since 2005, young people in the city of Marquette have been asking for a better outdoor skate park.
They’re finally getting their wish.
Construction started earlier this week on a brand–new skate park at Fair Avenue and Pine Street.
An official groundbreaking ceremony was held this afternoon.
Skilled tradespeople and construction firms are donating labor and goods to help the project.
Nheena Weyer Ittner of the Marquette Skate Plaza Committee says Bacco Construction of Iron Mountain, Associated Constructors and A. Lindberg & Sons of Marquette are all involved, along with many others.
In 2006, the City Commission agreed to contribute $75,000 to the project if the Skate Plaza Committee could raise $150,000.
Many young people have helped raise that money.
Ricky Touchinski, a Marquette skater, says he and his friends solicited donations from people they know.
He’s thrilled the park is taking shape and wants anyone who loves skateboarding to come use it.
The total cost is $233,000.
The skate park should be complete either in late August or in September.
Once that happens, the city will take ownership of the plaza and will maintain it.
