Marquette is Fan Favorite for Tourism

Marquette is recognized as the most distinctive travel destination in the nation.

The city was one of 12 around the country that the National Trust for Historic Preservation recently selected as Distinctive Destinations for 2010.

Through the month of February, the search for the Fan Favorite slot was narrowed down by a nationwide online vote.

Marquette has won that contest with 37% of the vote.

The Fan Favorite award not only gives the area free advertising on a travel website, but it also puts the U.P. on the map as being a tourist destination, rather than as an area people may travel through on the way to someplace else.

Lake Superior Community Partnership CEO Amy Clickner says Marquette stood out from the rest because of both national and local support.

She says if you’ve ever been in the U.P. for a substantial period of time, it becomes a part of you, and she thought that played a role in the voting.

The 11 other cities in the running for the Fan Favorite selection included St. Louis, Missouri; Rockland, Maine and Provincetown, Massachusetts.
