Marquette H.S. wins numerous swimming awards

MARQUETTE — Marquette High School Swim Team was celebrated at tonight’s school board meeting for breaking records, winning titles and showing everyone what it takes to be winning team.

A total of twelve records were broken from the Marquette high school swim team including the boys and girls teams each winning six “All U.P” as well as walking away with several “swimmers of the year” titles.

“I won all four of my events, the 200 medley relay, the 200 I–M, the 100 breast stroke and the 400 free–style relay. Then I swam the 100 breast stroke in which I broke the U.P. record, it was my goal last year but I fell short by half a second and so I came in this year more determined and I broke it by almost a full second,” said Nathan Rotando, Marquette H.S. swim team senior.
“I got U.P. swimmer of the year which was a surprise and I also got the All U.P. swim team, then I won all four of my events, two were relays, then I broke two pool records and the relay record with my teammates. We put in a lot of hard work, we went to practice when other teams wouldn’t, we went that extra foot and we tried really hard and I think we came together as a team,” said Sam Williams, Marquette H.S. swim team junior.

Coach Nathan McFarren added “I’ve always been proud to be a part of Marquette swimming, the community, the parents, the kids, they all make it easy to be the coach. They are a really hard working crew, they put the effort in. I was expecting them to do well, just not that well, it was pretty incredible.”

The students were given several rounds of applause for all they have accomplished.
