Marquette County Sheriff Receives Special Flag

Marquette County Sheriff Michael Lovelace was recently presented with a United States Flag that was flown on September 11, 2011 over Forwarding Operating Base Shank in Logar Province, Afghanistan. Presenting the flag to Sheriff Lovelace is U.S. Army First Sergeant DeWayne Ward of the 1432 Engineer Company, Iron River, Michigan. Sgt. Ward is 15 year veteran Road Patrol Deputy with the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and has served in the Army for 18 years. Deputy Ward’s deployments include three months in 2005 in Monroe, Louisiana to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, October 2006-October 2007 to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and most recently from November 2010-November 2011 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Deputy Ward is a graduate of Northern Michigan University and the NMU Police Academy. He is married and the proud father of two children.

“We are proud of Deputy Ward for the service he has provided to his country and to Marquette County. The sacrifice he has made, due to his commitment to the Army, is honorable” says Sheriff Mike Lovelace. “DeWayne is very fortunate to have a supporting wife and children in dealing with his time away from family and the worries that come with a husband and father being at war” Lovelace went on to say.
