Marquette County Board Questions Mine Appraisal

The Marquette County Board is raising questions about the appraised value of the Kennecott Eagle Mine.

At a regular scheduled board meeting tonight the commissioners made a motion to request a copy of the recent appraisal of the Kennecott Eagle Mine ore body by State Geologist Hal Fitch.

The board also passed a motion to send a letter to the tax commission challenging the appraisal of the mine until copies of the report are received.

The purchase of government counseling services are also up for consideration. This would give Marquette County a tie to government activity in Lansing, particularly when it comes to the on–going issue of a possible change to the tax on U.P mining.

The board agreed to put a hold on the vote for purchase of the services until further information is collected from various other agencies already employed by the board.
