Marquette City Charter Commission

Work is moving along to revise the document that governs how the City of Marquette operates.

The city’s Charter Commission got together this afternoon at city hall.

They wanted to listen to residents tell them what they’d like to see changed in the document.

The revisions are expected to be on the ballot in November.

Commission chair Robert Kulisheck says the group has found 70 instances where state and federal law changes have made the charter redundant.

There are some administrative changes possible, particularly to the calendar for the city’s fiscal year — it doesn’t begin when the state or the federal fiscal year does.

The charter was last revised in 1950.

Anyone who couldn’t make it this afternoon can also stop by city hall tonight from 6 until 8.

The Charter Commission has its next meeting next Wednesday, the 8th.
