Marquette Board of Light & Power warns against phone scams

A new phone scam is making its way around the Marquette area.

Officials from the Marquette Board of Light & Power say the scam targets commercial customers. Victims have been called and told that their electric power service would be disconnected in 45 minutes to one hour unless payment is made. The caller then requests financial and credit card information.

MBLP officials say these calls are not coming from them and not to give out financial information. They have notified the Marquette City Police Department of the scam.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be with the MBLP telling you your electric service will be disconnected, officials advise that you write down the phone number, hang up and then call the MBLP at (906) 228-0311.
