Marquette Arts and Culture Center Receives Grant

The City of Marquette Community Services – Arts and Culture Center has been awarded $2,500.00 in grant funds from the New Leaders Arts Council of Michigan (NLACM), funded through the State of Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA). The funds are specified for a Marquette Matters public art project.  Marquette Matters is the City of Marquette’s bi-monthly newsletter.  The art project will be facilitated by the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Advisory Committee and a local community artist in July 2012. Area students and youth will work with the artist to realize ten painted mural panels, and the completed panels will be installed at the Marquette Commons. There is no participation cost for those involved.

The NLACM is a young leaders’ advisory council of the MCACA and is dedicated to promoting arts and culture in Michigan, focusing on supporting other young leaders. The NLACM works to increase young people’s access to arts and culture programs within Michigan; advise the MCACA on issues relating to young people’s participation in, access to, and development through arts and culture in Michigan; support program, projects, and initiatives of the MCACA; and promote the value of arts and culture to a community. This program uses donations from the MCACA tax check-off fund.

Interested artists can download an artist application at www.mqtcty.org/arts; applications are due on June 1, 2012. The public is invited to vote for their favorite design submission between June 11 and 25 at the Arts and Culture Center, located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library. Production will begin the week of July 9. Please contact the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center at 906-228-0472 or visit www.mqtcty.org/arts for more information.
