Man dies in motorcycle accident

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP — A Houghton man is dead after crashing a motorcycle he was test driving.

Just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday, troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post were dispatched to the crash site between Dodgeville and Huron Town in Portage Township. The victim, identified as 52-year-old James Mewborn of Houghton, was test driving a 2001 Kawasaki motorcycle.

Police say that Mewborn appeared to have suffered a medical emergency, which caused him to run off the roadway and crash into a ditch. Speed and alcohol were not factors in the accident.

The Houghton Police Department, Michigan Tech Public Safety, Huron Town Fire Department, Mercy Ambulance and Superior Service Towing all assisted at the scene.
