Man arrested in 146 mph high speed chase

A man driving a red Pontiac Trans Am is in police custody in Iron County after a 16 mile chase lasting 8 minutes with speeds up to 146 mph.

It started at 7:48 p.m. last night when a vehicle traveling Northbound on CTH N in Florence County was clocked in at 72 mph in a 55 mph zone. The Florence County deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver thwarted those attempts and sped off at over 120 mph through the Town of Florence heading west on US Highway 2.

After crossing state lines, the Iron County Sheriff’s Office joined in on the pursuit with two other Florence County cars at speeds exceeding 126 mph. Upon entering Iron County, the perpetrator’s vehicle accelerated to 146 mph. At that point, the Michigan State police deployed “stop stick” devices just south of Crystal Falls. However, the vehicle turned on County Road 424 towards Alpha, Michigan before reaching the devices.

The suspect then stopped voluntarily just east of Alpha, Michigan and was taken away using felony procedures. The chase did not result in any injuries or damage. The  name of the suspect is not being released at this time.
