M-26 construction project receives award

A construction project on M-26 in Laurium has received statewide recognition for its work.

The Village of Laurium was recently presented with an Award of Excellence by the Michigan Concrete Association for the 2013 reconstruction of the M-26 Granitoid Concrete Pavement on the corner of Hecla and Third Streets.

The Granitoid pavement was originally built in the early 1900’s and it was time for a new look. Village Manager Ed Vertin said he is proud of the recognition the project is receiving.

“The achievement award is rather prestigious,” he said.” A lot of work and a lot of quality control went into the project.”

Vertin said the project cost a total of $3.1 million, and so far reaction from the community is positive.

“Its been great.  Its been a long time coming and everybody is satisfied with it. It really dresses up the Laurium downtown,” he said.

The project was funded with a combination of federal enhancement grants along with funding both from both the village and from MDOT.
