Lt. Gov. Visiting U.P. Companies

Michigan’s lieutenant governor is visiting the Upper Peninsula to learn what’s making several area companies successful.

Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley made his way through the southern U.P. today.

We caught up with him when he visited MJ Electric in Iron Mountain this afternoon.

He says the stories of successful U.P. companies aren’t told often enough.

Calley says from the government’s standpoint, he’s trying to help Governor Rick Snyder and the legislature create a business environment conducive to job growth, remove obstacles in the paths of entrepreneurs and then watch what the entrepreneurs can do.

The lieutenant governor also visited Grede, LLC in Kingsford this morning.

He says businesspeople frequently tell him the market for skilled labor is an ongoing issue — Michigan doesn’t have enough skilled tradespeople to fill the types of jobs that are in greatest demand in the state.

Calley’s U.P. swing will last two more days.

He’ll also visit companies in L’Anse, Munising, Gulliver and Sault Ste. Marie.
