MARQUETTE — The Lake Superior Youth Theater’s summer season has started, and they’re getting a great play ready for your entertainment.

The theater group held auditions Tuesday for a play called “Once On This Island Jr.” It’s a Caribbean adaptation of Hans Christen Anderson’s The Little Mermaid.

“I thought this would be a really good play and my mom was like, ‘oh, do you want to try out for this play?’ I just like being in the plays for fun and that,” said Kyley Elmblad, who tried out this afternoon.

Anyone from 3 years old to 18 can audition, but most of the kids have been in the 9 to 12 range. The directors say the young age range makes auditions very interesting.

“You get to see kind of everything. You get to see kids come in that are shy, kids who have done the youth theater for a long time, so they come in and know who we are so they’re not as nervous. And then there’s kids that come in that are just bundles of energy that come in and just kill their audition,” said David Bashaw, a co–director for the play.

The play opens August sixth.
