LSSU loses five employees, cites enrollment decline

SAULT STE. MARIE — An eastern U.P. university has lost a few members of its staff.

Officials at Lake Superior State University cite long-term enrollment decline as one of the reasons behind the layoff of five employees last week. That decline resulted in a $2 million structural deficit for LSSU.

Over the past year, the university has reduced 28 full time equivalent positions through various means including retirements and a voluntary buy-out program. Officials say the university is also trying to improve efficiency by aggregating services and functions.
